One of the most freeing techniques in metalsmithing is learning how to cut metal by hand which is what Iris will be teaching you in Part I of this class. Imagine designing any type of flat shape or image and then translating it into precious metal! Students will learn how to make exterior and interior cuts. In addition, details on filing and surface textures will be explored. Inspiration or appropriation? Students will discuss where to find copyright free sources and how to translate them into a viable design. In Part 2 of this class, students will learn about the most popular ways to research, purchase and make their own patinas. Four different processes will be demonstrated with hands-on experience plus time for questions and discussions. In particular there will be a discussion on safety, responsible disposal of chemicals and non-toxic alternatives. No experience is necessary and the materials fee covers supplies, handouts and use of tools.
